Friends of Alexandra House

We have set up a “Friends of Alexandra House” Group for relatives of people living in the service and others who are interested in the service who may be a previous residents relative. 

This group meets with the management team and discusses changes, developments and provides the opportunity to share views and opinions. It also focuses on what we could do to improve the lives of those living in the service.

Residential Care

Alexandra House

Hillborough Road, Olton, Solihull

Alexandra House is a modern purposely designed residential care home, catering for 35 older people in nicely furnished and decorated self-contained rooms. The home certainly has a welcoming atmosphere with a number of bright and airy informal sitting areas – including a very popular large conservatory. The home is located in safe and secure environment with pleasant landscaped gardens, and every room has a nice outlook.

 

Most importantly though the home is well run by a highly qualified Manager Susan James, and her experienced team of dedicated, NVQ qualified staff who have also received specialist training in caring for people developing dementia. They provide continuity of care and most of our staff here have worked for the Trust for many years.

 

All meals are prepared fresh and are cooked 'on site' to a high nutritional standard in our well-appointed kitchen by our catering manager, Patricia Hines, and her team, rated 5 Stars for excellent food hygiene by Solihull Council. Our catering team are highly experienced in this area, consult with residents on menu planning and are able to cater for people with special dietary needs.
 

Alexandra House is registered with the Care Quality Commission and enjoys an excellent reputation from the regulators, Solihull Council, and our local health care professionals. Providing individually tailored care plans and then actually delivering consistently high care services is without doubt the number one priority for everyone involved.

We organise regular visits from dentists, the chiropodist, opticians, and the district nursing team. 

We also hold regular Residents meetings to ensure that the views of our residents are taken into account.

In December 2018, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) carried out an unannounced inspection of Alexandra House. Whilst the CQC found the service to be effective and caring, the service was overall graded as ‘Requiring Improvement’. We acknowledge that the CQC reports highlights some areas where we could improve and we have developed a Service Improvement Plan to address these areas.

The CQC found the service to provide good care standards, catering and cleaning and facilities management and it is our intention that all aspects of our service are good or excellent. We recognise that Alexandra House has lacked consistency in management and therefore, we undertook an extensive recruitment campaign and appointed an extremely experienced Manager for the service earlier this year. We have increased the support to the service from our Senior Management Team who are working alongside the Manager. In the last few months, we have been reviewing our Policies & Processes and Job Descriptions and we have worked very closely with our local Pharmacist to ensure that our service is safe and responsive. We have implemented new training and mentoring for staff and introduced a programme of activities for residents. 

 

We want to assure residents, their families and professionals both internally and externally that as an organisation, we are committed to providing the best quality care. My Mother Mrs.W stayed at Alexandra House on a step down from Heartlands Hospital. This was difficult for my mother as she wanted to return home after hospital. The staff at Alexandra House were amazing with my mother they settled her in and the care she received whilst there was brilliant. All the staff were caring and supportive and we would like to say a massive "Thank You" to your care assistants who understood mom's needs. The staff were helpful and supportive to us as a family which we appreciated. Once again Thank you for the care you gave to our mother.
