150 years | 150 Lives

The Trust celebrates its 150th anniversary this year and one way in which we plan to mark this prestigious milestone is to bring together a collection of 150 stories from real people whose lives have been touched by Sir Josiah Mason or the Trust.

We are therefore looking for individuals who can share a short story (no more than half a page to one page of A4) of how the legacy of Sir Josiah Mason has had a positive impact on their lives. This could include people who lived at the orphanage or our sheltered/residential housing projects, young people who have benefited from the projects we have supported, apprentices or relatives/carers or staff.

If you or a loved one have benefited from the legacy of Sir Josiah Mason, we would love to hear your story.

You can share this with us by emailing it to enquiries@sjmt.org.uk or call us on 0121 245 1002.

Have Your Say!

The past couple of months have been an exciting time for the Trust, during which we have been looking at who we are as an organisation and what we want to achieve in the future.

Lots of people have been involved in helping us look at what we should be doing as an organisation to make a difference to the lives of local people in the coming years. Now there is a chance for many more people to have a say.

We are really excited to be able to share with you our proposed Mission, Vision and Values.

Our Vision

We want everyone, regardless of age or circumstances, to feel secure, have opportunities & to thrive

Our Mission

We offer people in need access to opportunities, hope and a place where they belong through the provision of quality housing, care, education and support

Our Values

Personalised – because no two people are the same

Dignity – because everyone is worthy of honour and respect

Innovation – because we are original and creative in our thinking

Excellence – because we want to be recognised for providing quality services & support

Honesty – because we are transparent and accountable in all that we do

Fun – because we want to be a great place to work and receive support

As an organisation, we think it is really important that we have a plan of what we want to achieve in the future.  We call this our Strategy. Between 2018 and 2023, we’re going to be ‘Building on Strong Foundations’ by working across 5 areas:

To be a leading provider in Birmingham and Solihull

We will raise our profile and work more in partnership & collaboration.

To help more people

We will initiate a long term development and expansion plan for our sheltered housing provision, support older people in the community, grow a range of new services and opportunities across Birmingham and Solihull to support far more people affected by poverty, particularly young people and we will look at how we can best support carers.

To maintain financial sustainability and to grow

We will expand the places our funding comes from, make better use of the assets we have and ensure that our services are efficient and sustainable.

To be the best we can be

We will ensure that our services are of the best quality, that we recognise the expertise of people who use our services, that we make the best use of digital technology and ensure that all we do promotes and recognises the value that equality and diversity bring to our organisation.

To be an employer of choice

We will ensure that we are well led and that we value and invest in our workforce so that they can achieve the best outcomes for the people they support.

We want you to tell us what you think about our proposed Mission, Vision, Values and priorities. You can do this by taking part in a really quick survey. It will take no more than 5 minutes & really help us make sure that we have got things right.

You can complete the survey by CLICKING HERE and it will be open for you to complete until Friday 8th December.

Volunteering Day - Wesleyan Assurance

We are delighted to report that on 29th September 2017 staff from Wesleyan Assurance in Birmingham visited the Trust in order to volunteer at our Olton site, situated in Solihull, as part of their initiative to carry out work in the local community. Several volunteers kindly carried out planting of bulbs in the borders at the rear of Alexandra House, our Residential Care Home, and assisted with the painting of the boundary fencing at the rear of Alexandra Court, our Extra Care Scheme, and Alexandra House.

Volunteers from Wesleyan have definitely made an improvement to our grounds and we thank them for this. Photos from the day can be seen below...

Edna Appleby Celebrates her 105th Birthday!

We are delighted to announce that Edna Appleby, who is a resident at Alexandra House,

our Residential Care Home in Olton, celebrated her milestone 105th birthday on Sunday

7th May 2017. Edna was born on 7th May 1912 and spent her early life growing up in

Solihull, living on Olton Boulevard. Edna is one of seven children, born to her parents

Arthur and Amy. Edna now has only one living sibling, Joyce, who is 86 years old.

Edna has certainly led an interesting life, in 1936, she married her husband Albert who

she shared many happy years with before he sadly passed away in 1976. They had four

children together, Carol, Clive, Peter and Derek. Edna enjoys spending time with her

family, her daughter Carol now lives in Kenilworth and one of her sons, Clive, has moved to Hereford.

Sadly, Peter and Derek have passed away. During her working life, Edna worked as a ‘Dinner

Lady’ at Lode Heath School in Solihull. In her younger days, one of Edna’s favourite hobbies was gardening and she enjoyed planting flowers and growing her own vegetables, in particular tomatoes. From time to time, she also liked to help her daughter Carol at the farm on Saturdays. Edna was very fond of her last two dogs called Lady and Ricky.

In November 2015, Edna moved to Alexandra House where she

now lives happily. She celebrated her birthday at our care home

with her family and friends who organised a fantastic party for

her. Edna and her family enjoyed a delicious buffet and

entertainment was provided by ‘Vintage Class’, a 1940’s style

singing group. The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Mr Mike Robinson

and the Mayoress of Solihull Mrs Jenny Robinson were also in

attendance and joined in with the celebrations. Happy birthday Edna!

Sir Josiah Mason Trust contributed to Age UK Solihull’s World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was developed and launched on June 15, 2006 and is recognized annually. It aims to focus global attention on the problem of physical, emotional, and financial abuse of elders.

On Wednesday 15th June 2016, to help raise money, staff members at Head Office wore purple and ‘dressed down’ for work, donating £1 each to Age UK Solihull. Several staff members also brought in purple-themed cakes to sell, to help raise money for this important cause.

In our care schemes, Alexandra Court and Alexandra House, residents and staff also joined in and entertainment was provided. Our Catering Manager, Pat Hines, arranged an afternoon tea with purple-themed cakes, and donations were also collected. Photos from the day can be seen above.
