Our History

The Sir Josiah Mason Trust is the trading name of our three separate registered charities:-

1. Sir Josiah Mason’s Almshouse Charity (Registration No. 209283)

2. Sir Josiah Mason’s Care Charity (Registration No. 1073755)

3. Sir Josiah Mason‘s Relief in Need & Educational Charity (Registration No. 1073756)

The Almshouse charity was originally founded in 1868 as Josiah Mason’s Orphanage and Almshouse but when the need for the orphanage declined in the 1960’s the land was sold and further accommodation for the elderly was built. Today the Almshouse charity provides over 160 homes for elderly people, principally in sheltered housing at Olton, Shirley and in Erdington.

But operations expanded over the years and we now also provide a number of mobility standard flats for elderly people who have physical disabilities. In addition, there is an Extra Care Housing scheme for more frail elderly people, a domiciliary services team, and a fully Registered Care Home, but this is administered and controlled by the Care Charity.

We also now provide much needed temporary respite accommodation with 24hourcare in Alexandra Court.

The Sir Josiah Mason Almshouse Charity is also a Housing Association registered with the Tenant Services Authority and the Housing Ombudsman. Our Care & Domiciliary Services are fully registered with the Care Quality Commission.

The key characteristic of the Trust is that we specialise only on providing quality housing and care solutions for elderly people and we are told by our residents that we do it well.

Finally the Trust also administers an endowed charity - for Relief in Need and Education. This was established to support elderly people in need in the Birmingham and Solihull areas, and to also provide grants and other practical assistance to young people who require financial or other help with their training or education costs. Typically ‘one off’ grants to assist with the costs of books, or perhaps items of training equipment.

This Charity now has its own web-site. Please visit www.sjmt-rin.org.uk for more information.

GOVERNANCE

The Trustees of all three charities share collective responsibility for ensuring good governance and they have adopted ‘Excellence in Governance’ - The Code for members and good practice guidance, as issued by the National Housing Federation. Trustees also follow guidance and regulations as issued by the Charity Commission.

The Board of Trustees between them they have a deep understanding of housing, care & support issues. In addition, they are responsible for setting high level strategic objectives, ensuring the financial viability of the Trust, for approving business plans and importantly, in monitoring operational performance to ensure that we’re actually achieving agreed objectives.
